Linking to the soccer world

December 1, 2008 1:05 AM

By Sheldon Shealer, editor

As we transition from the fall to the winter soccer season, here's a chance to get caught up on a couple of fall stories of regional interest:

A goalkeeper from a New England prep school is back in action following a life-threatening injury in a match two months ago, writes the Boston Globe.

After 34 seasons, Stan Williston is calling it a career, and the Sentinel writes about an alumni game that will be resurrected to honor the coach who had 460 career wins.

Thinking winter ...

November 21, 2008 11:21 AM

By Sheldon Shealer, editor

There snow on the ground in the East, but such warm-weather states as California, Texas and California are gearing up for the winter high school season.

Winter season play has started in Florida.

Hawaii, Louisiana and Mississippi also contest high school school in the winter season.

This is your change to add to the preseason debate ... who should be the winter preseason No. 1 ... and why?

Here's a quick glance at potential No. 1 girls teams hailing from California: (the boys teams to consider will be released this afternoon)

* Torrey Pines - This San Diego power was the FAB 50 No. 1 team in 2007 and was No. 1 in 2008 until getting upset in the Southern Region Championships on PKs. Although Torrey Pines Ashlin Yahr and Stephanie Malik, it returns Palomar League Player of the Year Kate Cutting, now a senior, and sophomore standout Alexandra Bailey.

* Esperanza - With Southern Cal commit Courtney Garcia and Tennessee commit Kylie Bono, Esperanza certainly has the horses to challenge for the CIF-Southern Section Division I title - the most treasured title among the winter soccer season.

* San Clemente - This powerhouse located between Los Angeles and San Diego is expecting the return of four All-CIF Southern Section Division I performers - Kelcy Wilson, Cami Berg, Greer Zerboni and Frannie Coxe.

* Aliso Niguel - Like Esperanza, Aliso always turns in great seasons but has found it difficult to capture that elusive CIF-Southern Section Division I crown. This year's team should feature of the the country's best defensive units with junior keeper Kathleen Messinger and senior backs Haley Horton and Megan Sherman.

* Another team that is always in the title chase is Mater Dei. This year's team expects the return of all-section performers Mary-Grace Schmidt and Darien Vercillo.

CA, FL, TX, HA, LA, MS, Esperanza, Torrey Pines, San Clemente, Aliso Niguel, Mater Dei

Girls state-by-state rankings

November 17, 2008 2:25 AM

By Sheldon Shealer, editor

Red Bank Catholic (N.J.) bounced defending state champ Gloucester Catholic (N.J.) and Brick (N.J.) upset Montgomery (N.J.), highlighting a wild week of playoff results in the Garden State.

Add to it John Jay's state title in New York Class AA and Conestoga's repeat title in PIAA Class AAA, and this week's FAB 50 Top 10 will have a slightly new look.

Today, we release the weekly ESPN Rise state-by-state rankings with the ESPN Rise FAB 50 to appear Tuesday on ESPNRise.com.

Through Sunday, Nov. 16
